He’d been so proud when he’d held his tiny, newborn, redheaded daughter. He loved his other three children so much, but Antonia was so small and spunky and loud. So much like him.
He’d been just as proud when she’d protected her tiny twin from some bullies out on the streets. Rene was a strong boy, but he was just so small and shy. Annie hadn’t asked questions, she’d just put a fist through Rene’s tormenters’ noses and then went to comfort her brother.
The pride only swelled when they went to war, Annie marching with the best and the brightest that their nation had to offer. She was brave and fearless and strong and reminded him so much of himself when he was still young and spry. Before the Incident that had started this whole mess.
And the pride was still there, even through the grieving, when he thought he’d lost both of his daughters to the Silent Palace forever. Renee had died in battle, and with her death, Annie had died inside.
But when Annie came back, her little sister by the hand, that pride turned to huge, soul tearing relief and love for his baby girl, his little Tadpole.
